Donnelly Development - Project Spotlight

SportsTown USA

SportsTown USA is a 63 acre, 600,000 square foot development intended to blend sports, entertainment, and retail together, creating a new experience that is unique and innovative. Over 4,000,000 international amateur sports visitors are expected annually at The National Sports Center in Blaine. Using the common bond of sports, SportsTown USA will be a marquee location for athletes, visitors, and the local community.

SportsTown USA is surrounded by the largest outdoor athletic field complex including: the largest hockey facility in the world, two premier golf courses, a regional meeting center, and a unique bike racing facility. In addition, there are proposed plans for development of a new minor league baseball stadium with a seating capacity of 15,000. The area will feature running paths, jogging and walking trails, and cross country skiing. The 6.4 acre lake will encourage summer and winter activities, such as paddle boats and ice skating, and will be surrounded by restaurants. There will also be a "Ceremonial Square" for medal ceremonies and other special events.

Envisioned within the SportsTown USA complex is a system to allow the entire site to be closed off from vehicular traffic to help create a very festive and pedestrian centered atmosphere during tournament weekends. The Sports Mall is pedestrian oriented and is designed to encourage pedestrian movement between the existing sports facilities at the National Sports Center and the SportsTown USA.

The community of Blaine will benefit tremendously from the development of this project. Our experience in developing facilities of all kinds makes us confident that the successful development of SportsTown USA will reach beyond the basic goal of a profitable investment and create a project of historic significance that Blaine and its residents can be proud to call their own.

It is also vitally important to us that we clearly communicate to all stakeholders involved in the project that we are committed to building SportsTown USA with design concepts and using construction methods that, above all, recognize the importance of environmental sustainability in developing a facility that will be part of the fabric of the Blaine community for many decades to come. This commitment makes perfect economic sense; it is also simply the right thing to do.

SportsTown USA will create many benefits for the community of Blaine:

Since opening its doors, the National Sports Center has hosted over 22 million visitors. In 2005, 3.3 million people visited the campus, making it Minnesota's most visited sports facility - more than the Metrodome, Target Center or Xcel Energy Center. SportsTown USA will have a symbiotic relationship with the NSC by giving the complex the ability to host events on a larger scale and attract even more new visitors to the facility. This revolutionary new project will increase the tax revenues for the City of Blaine. In addition, SportsTown USA will attract more tourist dollars to the area.

Finally, the community will be able to enjoy the unparalleled activities, restaurants, retail, and training facilities. Overall, the SportsTown USA project provides an exceptional opportunity for the City of Blaine and its citizens, as well as the National Sports Center.
